Antibody Engineering and its applications for the Development of Biological Drugs		Dr. Dae Young Kim Dr. Yu Jung Kim
Instruction	Antibody engineering is a part of protein engineering which has been grown up through antibody discovery technologies such as mouse hybridoma, phage display and human TG mouse technology, the development of multispecific antibodies, and the improvement of efficacy and properties of antibodies through their structural modifications. Currently, it is expanding its scope to the immunotherapy field, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, and the gene and cell therapy, such as CAR-T, as well. Also, antibody engineering includes the mass production of monoclonal antibodies which is required for non-clinical animal studies and clinical trials, in which highly efficient production cell lines, bioprocess development and formulation technologies are essential. In this session, we will discuss recent trends in this unique biotechnological field, focusing on antibody engineering and its applications for the development of biological drugs.

Instruction	Oxidoreductases are versatile bio-catalysts that catalyze redox reactions by exchange of electrons between donor and acceptor molecules, involving electron transfer, proton/hydrogen extraction, hydride transfer, oxygen insertion, or other important steps. They are ubiquitous in nature comprising oxidases, dehydrogenases, hydroxylases, oxygenases, peroxidases and reductases that catalyze a vast range of chemical reactions with high specificity, efficiency, and selectivity. Oxidoreductase-based catalysts are suitable for industrial applications for their biodegradability, specificity and efficiency, so these enzymes are currently used in a variety of applications, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, food and chemical synthesis. However, further development of new applications with these enzymes is important to replace toxic/expensive chemicals, save energy/resource consumption, create new functionalities or reduce the negative impact on the environment. In this session, recent advances in their applications will be introduced and the future growth of oxidoreductases as valuable biocatalysts will be discussed.

Human milk oligosaccharides: "In the human body" and "In the microbes"		Prof. Dae-Hyuk Kweon Prof. Do Yup Lee
Instruction	Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a very important constituent of human milk. They show a variety of health benefits including prebiotic effects. We will discuss HMOs' action mechanisms such as their anti-adhesive properties, the immune system modulation, and impact on bacterial flora development. HMOs may also decrease the risk of infection by their interactions with viruses, bacteria or protozoa. In "In the body" section, the function and commercial use of HMOs, future directions, and research on the use of HMOs as a therapy will be discussed. In "In the microbes" section, microbial production of fucosyllactoses, and the impact of HMOs on microbial flora will be discussed. Instruction	Currently a large amount of microplastics is found in the ocean, which causes severe damage to the marine ecosystem, and at the same time, the amount of microplastics consumed by an average adult is reported one credit plastic card every week. In the twentieth century, plastic, one of man's necessities and one of the great inventions, became a threat to humans and Nature. In order to address this microplastic problem, this symposium will take the time to discuss the biodegradation technology of microplastics and the development of a new kind of biodegradable plastic material if disposed to environment including marine. Instruction	Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which causes serious respiratory illness such as pneumonia and lung failure, was first reported in Wuhan city of China. The causative agent of COVID-19 was confirmed as a novel beta-coronavirus, now known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is most likely originated from zoonotic coronaviruses, The outbreak of emerging severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease (COVID-19) in China has been brought to global attention and declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020. Scientific advancements since the pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002~2003 and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in 2012 have accelerated our understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 and the development of therapeutics to treat viral infection. As no specific therapeutics and vaccines are available for disease control, the epidemic of COVID-19 is posing a great threat for global public health. To provide a comprehensive summary to public health authorities and potential readers worldwide, here we will prepare detailed information about novel animal model and recent analysis of SARS-CoV-2 isolated in South Korea and introduce the current status of development of measures in this review.

Bridging Academia and Industry in Industrial Biotechnology: R&D Action of National Lab.		Prof. Jeong-Geol Na Prof. Tae Wan Kim
Instruction	Industrial biotechnology has played an essential role in the past decades as a promising solution to address economic and societal problems from climate change attributable to fossil fuel use. Notably, this technology features both biotechnology and chemical engineering disciplines. The appropriate combination of upstream (biotechnology) and downstream technology (chemical engineering) is crucial to develop innovative processes and thus, to penetrate markets. This symposium presents the recent achievements of National labs related to industrial biotechnology. Also, we discuss the significance of collaboration between academia, industry and National labs during the integration of unit technologies such as strain development, fermentation, separation, and scale-up, where research and development converge.

Recent Advances in Drug Delivery Systems for Clinical Translation		Prof. Ji Hoon Jeong
Instruction	To improve therapeutic effect of a drug and reduce its adverse side effects, drug delivery systems are designed for the selective accumulation of drug molecules at the disease site in a controlled fashion and attenuated localization in normal tissues. Recently, biocompatible 'smart' nanomaterials have attracted much attention due to their unique properties and enormous clinical potentials. In this symposium, we will discuss the strategies for designing advanced nanomaterials and delivery platforms for small molecular drugs as well as biological drugs.
