---|---|---|---|
Instruction | Organ-on-a-chip (OOC) is a multi-channel 3-D microfluidic cell culture chip that simulates the activities, mechanics and physiological response of a single organ or multiple organs. It is realized through the convergence of Lab on a chip (LOC) technology and Tissue Engineering and permits the study of human physiology in an organ-specific context, introducing a novel model of in vitro multicellular human tissue. Recently, much effort has been focused on the development of OOC towards building a 3D microfluidic cell culture system that compartmentalizes microenvironments in which cells are cultured to mimic multiple organs in the body. This multi-compartmental perfused system has gained a remarkable interest in Pharmacology and Toxicology because it provides a cell culture environment close to the in vivo situation to reproduce more reliably in vivo mechanisms or ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Elimination) processes. In this symposium, we will discuss our OCC strategies to reproduce ADM processes for drug testing. The topics of the speakers will cover from a single organ on a chip (e.g., Skin on a chip, and Kidney on a chip) to human on a chip (e.g., Liver-Intestine-kidney on a chip and Intestine-Pancreas on a chip). | ||

---|---|---|---|
Instruction | Bioproducts could be viable by combining novel biocatalysts with appropriate bioprocesses. In particular, many efforts have recently been devoted to utilizing nonedible feedstocks to respond to societal issues from transforming sugars into fuels and chemicals. These trends require innovative microbial catalysts that can efficiently assimilate nonconventional carbon sources as well as a new generation of bioprocess in which these catalysts can exhibit proper activity. This session presents the recent progress in developing bioprocess to convert C1 gas (CO2, CO, and CH4) and nonedible sugars into valuable chemicals. We will also discuss two aspects of industrial biotechnology development: Catalyst preparation for implementing bioprocesses and process development for demonstrating full activities of biocatalysts. | ||

Instruction | Recently, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 and its spread to the world, interest in diagnosis and treatment of the virus has increased. In particular, rapid and accurate diagnosis to minimize spread is becoming important. In the midst of this, some Korean companies have developed high-performance diagnostic kits to supply them not only in Korea but also around the world, and are helping to slow the spread of COVID-19. In line with these current conditions, this symposium will discuss in-depth contents of how COVID-19 is currently being diagnosed. | ||
